Burnley Electrical Contractors Invest In Apprentices

Burnley Electrical Contractors Invest In Apprentices

Fast growing electrical contractors McDevitt Electrical & Controls Limited are delighted with the progress of their Apprentices.

Locci Milner, Declan Madill and Travis Holt are currently in their second year of a four-year qualification, undertaking Electrician Installation and Electrical Maintenance (Electrotechnical) apprenticeship standard. This means the Apprentices will develop a multitude of skills from across the business focussing on technical, practical and planning practices.

Despite the pandemic, McDevitt Electrical & Controls have seen continued growth through all areas of the business which has provided even more learning opportunities for the Apprentices.

Managing Director Sam Hodson explained, “We are acutely aware of and recognise the negative impact and suffering the COVID-19 pandemic has had on many businesses”.

“Within our industry however, demand for our services has meant we have grown at a quicker rate than ever before”.

“We have remained 100% operational which has meant we have been able to provide experience to Travis, Locci and Declan throughout all areas of the business”.

Sam continued, “This has given them a real 360° business insight and an understanding of the positive effects teamwork has throughout all departments, to enable us to deliver a quality project to our clients every time.”

Technical, quality and practical training

Apprentice Declan added “I started my apprenticeship with McDevitt Electrical & Controls to qualify in Electrical Installation and Electrical Maintenance and was expecting most of the work to be shadowing on-site”.

“But the day-to-day work and training I am now involved in, by far exceeds my original expectations. Not only I am working on-site, I am experiencing the design, preparation and build of electrical engineering in panels and control units that give me a much wider view of what is involved and the needs to be considered before even turning up on-site”.

Locci has been particularly impressed with the additional training, away from normal curriculum activities. Locci explained “Whilst my learning has been directly supporting my qualifications, I have also been able to take part in external and associated training including health and safety, additional building site considerations such as asbestos awareness and working at heights through PASMA (the international not-for-profit association for the mobile access tower industry)”.

Working both on practical and the theory elements of the Apprenticeship has worked well for Travis who said “I was a little unsure when I first applied how the mix of practical and theory based learning would work”.

“However, the insight I have received into all considerations of electrical contracting, electrical maintenance and electrical design across the business is helping me produce a really in-depth portfolio”.

“Working in the head office across the departments has given me a great insight and tested me to ensure I have made wide ranging considerations when tacking a piece of work”.

“The way my boss Sam has matched my practical learning and experience to the theoretical course work is fantastic and I am genuinely part of a whole team, not just ‘the Apprentice’”.

Working with Themis at Burnley College for Apprenticeships.

Mike Batt, Programme Leader for Electrical Apprenticeships at Themis at Burnley College, is delighted with the support that McDevitt Electrical & Controls provides to their Apprentices and the impact it has on their development.

Mike said: “The Apprentices are really positive about the support from Sam and his team and the skills and knowledge they are gaining.

“McDevitt Electrical and Controls have gone out of their way to ensure Themis Apprentices are integrated into the company and they recognise the benefits and opportunities that can be gained when including apprenticeships into their own growth plan.”

Sam concluded “As a firm we will always value our team and look for opportunities to develop their skills”.
